How to Care for Acanthus mollis

Acanthus mollis is an easy-to-grow plant that thrives in a variety of conditions. Follow these care guidelines to keep it healthy and vibrant:

  • Fertilising – A light application of balanced fertiliser in spring will encourage lush growth and healthy blooms.
  • Deadheading – Removing spent flowers can encourage prolonged blooming and keep the plant tidy.
  • Pruning – Cut back the plant in late autumn or early spring to encourage fresh, healthy growth.
  • Mulching – Apply a layer of mulch in autumn to help retain moisture and protect the roots during winter.
  • Winter Care – Hardy in most regions, but in very cold areas, apply a light mulch to provide extra protection.

Common Questions About Acanthus mollis

Is Acanthus mollis invasive?

Acanthus mollis can spread through underground rhizomes, so it may require occasional control in smaller gardens. If necessary, divide and replant in spring to manage its growth.

How do I prevent Acanthus mollis from taking over my garden?

To control its spread, plant it in a contained area or use a root barrier. Regularly removing self-seeded plants can also help manage its growth.

Does Acanthus mollis need staking?

No, the tall flower spikes are naturally sturdy and do not require staking. However, in very windy areas, providing light support may help prevent breakage.

Can Acanthus mollis grow in pots?

Yes, but it is best suited for large containers due to its spreading root system. Use well-draining soil and water regularly to maintain healthy growth.

Acanthus mollis is a stunning, easy-care perennial that offers architectural beauty, long-lasting flowers, and minimal maintenance. Whether planted in borders, wildlife gardens, or contemporary landscapes, this drought-tolerant and pollinator-friendly plant is a fantastic choice for any garden.
