Whether planted as a stand-alone feature or part of a mixed border, this beautiful tree adds colour and texture to your garden throughout the growing season.
The 'Flamingo' Box Elder is fast-growing and easy to maintain, making it an ideal choice for those looking to quickly add height and colour to their landscape. Its upright and slightly spreading habit, combined with its variegated foliage, brings a light and airy feel to gardens of all sizes. Due to its hardiness and ability to tolerate a variety of soil types and growing conditions, it is also an excellent choice for urban environments and public spaces.
Key Features of Acer negundo 'Flamingo'
Acer negundo 'Flamingo' stands out for its attractive, variegated foliage and fast-growing nature. This tree is perfect for adding a splash of colour and texture to your garden:
- Pink-Edged Foliage: In spring, the leaves emerge with a stunning pink edge, which gradually fades to white as the season progresses.
- Variegated Leaves: As the pink edges mature, they turn creamy-white, contrasting beautifully with the soft green of the leaf's centre.
- Fast-Growing Tree: With a relatively fast growth rate, 'Flamingo' quickly establishes itself as a mid-sized ornamental tree.
- Light and Airy Canopy: The soft and delicate foliage gives the tree a light and airy appearance, perfect for adding height without overwhelming the garden.
- Urban Tolerant: It is resilient and can tolerate urban pollution and less-than-ideal growing conditions, making it perfect for town gardens or street planting.
Growing Conditions and Size
Acer negundo 'Flamingo' is a tough and adaptable tree, growing well in a wide range of soil types and conditions. However, to get the best out of this variety, it’s essential to plant it in a suitable location.
- Position: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Full sun enhances the intensity of the variegation and encourages vigorous growth, though it can tolerate some shade.
- Soil Type: Thrives in moist, well-drained soil, but can tolerate heavier soils. It can grow in loam, clay, or sandy soils, making it a versatile choice.
- Height: 5 to 8 metres (16 to 26 feet) at maturity.
- Spread: 3 to 5 metres (10 to 16 feet) at maturity.
Its manageable size makes it ideal for both small and medium-sized gardens, where its beautiful variegated leaves can be fully appreciated. The Flamingo Box Elder is especially effective as a specimen tree, but it also works well in mixed borders where it provides contrast against darker foliage.
Maintenance Tips for Acer negundo 'Flamingo'
Acer negundo 'Flamingo' is a relatively low-maintenance tree, but with a few simple care tips, you can keep it looking its best throughout the year. Follow these basic maintenance guidelines to help your tree thrive:
- Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Regular pruning helps maintain the tree's shape and encourages the development of fresh, variegated leaves. Remove any dead, damaged, or weak branches to improve the tree's overall structure.
- Watering: Water regularly, especially during dry spells in the first few years after planting to help the tree establish strong roots. Mature trees are moderately drought-tolerant but will benefit from occasional watering in prolonged dry periods.
- Mulching: Apply a 5-7 cm (2-3 inch) layer of organic mulch around the base of the tree in spring. Mulching helps retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Keep mulch a few centimetres away from the trunk to avoid rot.
- Fertilising: Use a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in early spring to promote healthy growth. Acer negundo 'Flamingo' is not a heavy feeder, so a yearly application of fertiliser is usually sufficient.
- Pest and Disease Control: This variety is generally resistant to pests and diseases, though aphids or powdery mildew may occasionally be an issue. Inspect your tree regularly and use appropriate treatments, such as insecticidal soap or horticultural oils, if necessary. Proper watering and air circulation around the tree can also help prevent disease.
Ideal for a Range of Garden Styles
The 'Flamingo' Box Elder is a versatile tree that can suit various garden styles, from contemporary landscapes to more traditional settings. It works beautifully as a stand-alone specimen tree, providing year-round interest, but it can also be planted in groups for a more striking effect.
In smaller gardens, Acer negundo 'Flamingo' adds colour and height without taking up too much space, while its tolerance for urban conditions makes it an excellent choice for town gardens or street-side planting.
