- Height: Reaches up to 12–15 meters (39–49 feet) at maturity.
- Spread: Grows to a width of approximately 8–10 meters (26–33 feet).
- Foliage: Variegated green leaves with creamy-white edges, turning yellow in autumn.
- Flowers: Small yellow-green flowers appear in spring, followed by winged seeds.
- Growth Habit: Upright and broadly rounded crown with dense foliage.
- Uses: Ideal as a specimen tree for gardens, parks, and large landscapes.
Planting and Positioning
Positioning and planting Acer platanoides 'Drummondii' properly will ensure healthy growth and vibrant foliage:
- Soil Requirements: Thrives in well-drained, fertile soils but tolerates a wide range of soil types, including clay, loam, and sandy soils. Avoid waterlogged areas.
- Light Needs: Prefers full sun to partial shade. Too much shade can reduce the intensity of the variegation.
- Planting Tips:
- Dig a hole twice as wide and as deep as the root ball.
- Add organic matter or compost to improve soil quality.
- Plant at the same depth as in its container and water thoroughly after planting.
Maintenance Tips for Acer platanoides 'Drummondii'
This tree is relatively low-maintenance, but the following care tips will help it thrive:
Watering
- Water regularly during the first two years to establish roots.
- Once established, Acer platanoides 'Drummondii' is drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry spells.
Feeding
- Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to promote healthy growth.
- Mulch around the base with organic matter annually to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Pruning
- Prune during late autumn or winter when the tree is dormant.
- Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches to maintain shape and health.
- Avoid heavy pruning, as this can lead to excessive sap bleeding.
Pest and Disease Management
- Generally resistant to most pests, but keep an eye out for aphids, which may occasionally appear. Use insecticidal soap if necessary.
- May be susceptible to tar spot fungus, which appears as black spots on the leaves. This is primarily cosmetic and does not harm the tree; fallen leaves should be cleared to reduce reinfection.
Variegation Maintenance
- Occasionally, Acer platanoides 'Drummondii' may produce solid green shoots. Remove these immediately to maintain the variegated appearance.
Seasonal Care
- Apply mulch in autumn to protect roots from extreme winter temperatures.
- Clear away fallen leaves to prevent fungal infections.

- Low Maintenance: Adaptable and hardy, requiring minimal intervention once established.
- Focal Point: Makes a dramatic statement in any garden or large landscape.
