How to Care for Allium 'Magic'
Allium 'Magic' is a hardy perennial bulb that is easy to grow and care for. Follow these simple guidelines to ensure a healthy and vibrant display year after year.
- Light Requirements – Prefers full sun for best flowering. Can tolerate light shade, but blooms will be less abundant.
- Soil Type – Thrives in well-drained soil. It performs best in light, sandy, or loamy soil but can tolerate chalky conditions. Avoid waterlogged soil as bulbs may rot.
- Watering – Water moderately during the growing season, but once the flowers fade, reduce watering to allow the bulbs to go dormant.
- Planting Depth – Plant bulbs 10–15cm (4–6 inches) deep and 15–20cm (6–8 inches) apart in autumn for spring flowering.
- Fertilising – Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth and abundant blooms.
- Deadheading – Remove spent flowers to maintain a tidy appearance, but leave the foliage intact to allow energy to return to the bulbs.
- Mulching – A light mulch in autumn or early spring can help retain moisture and improve soil quality.
- Winter Care – Fully hardy in most regions. In very cold climates, apply a layer of mulch to protect bulbs from freezing temperatures.
Height and Spread of Allium 'Magic'
- Height: Grows to 60–80cm (24–32 inches), making it a great choice for adding vertical interest.
- Spread: Reaches a width of 15–25cm (6–10 inches), forming neat clumps over time.
Maintenance Tips for Allium 'Magic'
To keep your Allium 'Magic' thriving, follow these easy maintenance tips:
- Watering – Keep soil moist but not soggy during active growth. Reduce watering after flowering.
- Deadheading – Remove spent flower heads unless you want self-seeding for naturalisation.
- Foliage Care – Allow leaves to die back naturally before cutting them away to support next year’s blooms.
- Dividing – Every 3–4 years, lift and divide overcrowded bulbs in late summer or early autumn to maintain strong flowering.
