Planting Asparagus Connover's Colossal Seeds

1. Selecting the Right Location

Choose a sunny spot in your garden where the asparagus will receive at least 6-8 hours of sunlight each day. The area should also have good drainage, as asparagus does not thrive in waterlogged conditions.

2. Preparing the Soil

  • Soil Quality: Asparagus prefers rich, well-draining soil. Before planting, enrich the soil with compost or well-rotted manure to improve fertility.
  • Soil pH: Conduct a soil test to ensure the pH is between 6.5 and 7.5. If your soil is too acidic, you can add lime to raise the pH.

3. Sowing Seeds

  • Timing: Sow seeds indoors about 12-14 weeks before the last expected frost date, or directly outdoors in late spring after the danger of frost has passed.
  • Seed Depth: Plant seeds about 1-2 inches deep in rows spaced 2-3 feet apart.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Germination can take 2-3 weeks, so be patient!

Maintenance Tips for Asparagus Connover's Colossal

1. Watering

  • Regular Watering: Asparagus requires regular watering, especially during the first growing season. Aim for about 1 inch of water per week, either through rainfall or supplemental watering.
  • Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch around the plants to help retain soil moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.

2. Fertilizing

  • Early Spring Fertilizer: Apply a balanced fertilizer, such as a 10-10-10 NPK formula, in early spring as the spears begin to emerge. This will support healthy growth and high yields.
  • Organic Matter: Incorporating compost in the spring will provide essential nutrients and improve soil structure.

3. Weeding and Pest Control

  • Weed Control: Keep the area around your asparagus free of weeds, as they compete for nutrients and water. Hand-pulling or shallow hoeing is best to avoid damaging the shallow asparagus roots.
  • Pest Management: Monitor for pests such as asparagus beetles and aphids. Hand-picking and using organic insecticidal soap can help control infestations.

4. Pruning and Harvesting

  • Initial Year Care: In the first year, allow the spears to grow and develop ferns. Do not harvest any spears to establish a strong root system.
  • Harvesting: In the second year, you can begin harvesting when the spears reach 6-8 inches tall. Cut the spears at ground level using a sharp knife. Continue to harvest for 6-8 weeks and then allow the remaining spears to grow into ferns.
  • Post-Harvest Care: After the harvest season, allow the ferns to grow until they turn yellow and die back in the fall. This process is crucial for energy storage in the roots.

  • Pest Monitoring: Keep an eye out for any pest activity and take action as necessary.
