Butomus umbellatus

Welcome to D&M Garden Centre, where we present the exquisite Butomus umbellatus, commonly known as Flowering Rush. With its striking presence, attractive pink flowers, and graceful form, Butomus umbellatus is a remarkable aquatic perennial that adds elegance and charm to any water garden. Let us introduce you to this captivating plant and help you create a beautiful aquatic landscape.

Characteristics:

  • Height: Butomus umbellatus typically grows to a height of 2-3 feet (60-90 cm), adding vertical interest to the edges of ponds or water features.
  • Spread: The plant has a spreading habit, with a typical spread of 2-3 feet (60-90 cm), forming dense clumps and filling in aquatic environments with its lush foliage.
  • Foliage: Butomus umbellatus features long, slender, and arching leaves that emerge from the base of the plant. The foliage adds a textural element to the water garden and complements the vibrant flowers.
  • Flowers: In summer, Butomus umbellatus produces stunning umbels of delicate pink flowers held above the foliage on tall stems. These flowers attract pollinators and add a touch of elegance to the water garden.
  • Winter Interest: During winter, the foliage of Butomus umbellatus often dies back, leaving behind dried stalks that can still offer visual interest in the garden landscape.

Benefits and Uses:

  • Water Garden Accent: Butomus umbellatus is an excellent choice for planting in water gardens, ponds, or along the edges of streams and lakes, where it brings a touch of beauty and sophistication.
  • Wildlife Attraction: The flowers of Butomus umbellatus attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies, making it a beneficial plant for supporting local ecosystems.
  • Erosion Control: The spreading nature of Butomus umbellatus helps stabilize soil in wetland areas, making it an ideal choice for erosion control projects.
  • Cut Flower Potential: The exquisite pink flowers of Butomus umbellatus can be cut and used in floral arrangements, adding a unique and elegant touch to bouquets and displays.

Planting:

  • Water Depth: Butomus umbellatus thrives in water gardens with a water depth of 6-18 inches (15-45 cm). Ensure that the crown of the plant is placed just below the water surface during planting.
  • Soil: Plant Butomus umbellatus in aquatic planting baskets filled with a mixture of aquatic soil and gravel. This provides stability and allows for proper root development.
  • Sunlight: Butomus umbellatus prefers full sun to partial shade. Choose a location in your water garden that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.

Care:

  • Watering: Since Butomus umbellatus is an aquatic plant, it naturally receives its required water through its submerged roots. Regular watering is unnecessary, as long as the water level in the pond or water feature is maintained.
  • Fertilization: Butomus umbellatus typically does not require fertilization, as it obtains nutrients from the surrounding water. However, if the plant shows signs of nutrient deficiency, you can use aquatic-specific fertilizers sparingly.
  • Pruning: Remove any dead or damaged foliage and spent flowers to maintain the plant's appearance and encourage new growth. Pruning can be done in late fall or early spring.

Pests and Diseases:

  • Butomus umbellatus is generally resistant to pests and diseases. However, it is essential to regularly inspect the plant for signs of infestation or disease, such as aphids or leaf spot, and take appropriate measures if necessary.

With its graceful form, stunning pink flowers, and low-maintenance nature, Butomus umbellatus is a must-have plant for water gardens and aquatic landscapes. Its ability to attract pollinators and provide erosion control further enhances its value in the garden. Visit our Garden Centre today to explore the beauty of Butomus umbellatus and create a captivating water garden that exudes elegance and charm.
