- Spacing: Plant 12-24 inches apart to allow for adequate air circulation and prevent overcrowding.
Maintenance Tips
Proper maintenance ensures that Calocephalus brownii remains healthy and vibrant. Follow these tips for the best results:
- Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. After establishment, reduce frequency, watering only during dry periods. Avoid overwatering as the plant is susceptible to root rot.
- Pruning: Prune lightly in late winter or early spring to maintain a compact shape and encourage new growth. Remove any dead or damaged stems to promote healthy development.
- Fertilizing: Calocephalus brownii generally does not require much fertilization. If the soil is very poor, a light application of a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in the spring can help promote healthy growth.
- Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plant to help retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. Ensure mulch is kept away from the stems to prevent rot and promote proper airflow.
- Pest and Disease Control: Generally pest-free and disease-resistant. Monitor for signs of overwatering, such as yellowing leaves or root rot, and adjust care practices accordingly.
