Planting and Soil Requirements
- Planting Location: Prefers full sun to partial shade.
- Soil Type: Thrives in well-drained soil but can tolerate a range of soil types, including loamy, sandy, and clay soils.
- Soil pH: Prefers neutral to slightly acidic soil, but adaptable to various pH levels.
- Planting Depth: Plant at the same depth as it was in its pot.
- Spacing: Space plants 30–45 cm apart to allow them to spread and form a nice clump.
Watering and Fertilization
- Watering: Water regularly during the establishment period (first growing season). Once established, it is moderately drought-tolerant.
- Drought Tolerance: Can withstand short periods of drought, but performs best with consistent moisture.
- Fertilization: Apply a slow-release, balanced fertilizer in spring to promote healthy growth. Avoid over-fertilizing, as it can lead to weak, floppy growth.
- Mulching: Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, especially in hotter climates.
Light and Temperature Requirements
- Light Requirements: Performs best in full sun to partial shade. In hotter regions, partial shade during the hottest part of the day is beneficial.
- Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 7–10, tolerating mild frosts. In colder climates, provide some winter protection.
- Heat Tolerance: Can handle hot conditions if provided with adequate moisture.
- Humidity: Adaptable to both dry and humid conditions.
Pruning and Maintenance
- Pruning: Minimal pruning required. Remove any dead or damaged leaves in early spring to freshen the plant’s appearance.
- Tidy-Up: In late winter or early spring, cut back old foliage to around 5 cm from the ground to encourage new growth.
- Division: Can be divided every 2–3 years in early spring to maintain vigor and control size.
- Cleaning: Regularly clean out any dead foliage to prevent pests or diseases from harboring in the plant.
Pests and Diseases
- Pests: Generally pest-free, though slugs and snails may occasionally target young foliage.
- Diseases: Rarely affected by diseases. Good air circulation and well-drained soil can prevent fungal issues.
- Preventative Measures: Maintain proper spacing to allow airflow and avoid overcrowding, which can lead to disease.
Propagation
- Division: The easiest and most effective method of propagation is division in early spring. Dig up the clump and separate the roots into smaller sections.
- Seed Propagation: Can be grown from seed, but division is the preferred method for maintaining the plant's characteristics.
- Container Propagation: Easily propagated in containers for mass planting or ground cover.
Companion Planting and Garden Uses
- Companion Plants: Pairs well with other ornamental grasses, lavender, sedums, and low-growing perennials.
- Ornamental Use: Great for use in borders, rock gardens, and as a groundcover or edging plant.
- Container Gardening: Perfect for containers, where its fine, arching foliage can spill over the sides for a graceful effect.
- Groundcover: Effective as a groundcover in dry, sunny spots.
- Erosion Control: Can help with erosion control on slopes due to its fibrous root system.
Winter Care and Overwintering
- Frost Tolerance: Hardy to mild frosts, but in colder climates, mulch around the base to protect the roots during winter.
- Winter Interest: Its attractive foliage provides winter interest, even when the plant is not actively growing.
- Overwintering in Containers: For container-grown plants, move to a sheltered location or cover with a frost cloth in colder climates.
