Maintenance Tips for Caryopteris clandonensis 'Stephi'

Caryopteris clandonensis 'Stephi' is a low-maintenance shrub that requires minimal attention to thrive. Its drought tolerance and easy-care nature make it a great choice for both novice and experienced gardeners alike. Below are some maintenance tips to help keep your 'Stephi' looking its best.

  • Pruning: Prune back in early spring to promote vigorous new growth and maintain a neat shape. Caryopteris flowers on new wood, so a hard prune down to about 15 cm (6 inches) from the ground encourages a full display of blooms. Light pruning during the growing season can also help maintain its shape.
  • Watering: Although drought-tolerant once established, water regularly during the first growing season to help the plant establish a deep root system. After that, water only during prolonged dry spells.
  • Mulching: Apply a 5-7 cm (2-3 inch) layer of mulch around the base of the plant in spring to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature. Mulching will also provide a slow release of nutrients to the plant as the mulch decomposes.
  • Fertilising: Caryopteris is a light feeder, so apply a balanced, slow-release fertiliser in spring to encourage healthy growth and abundant flowers. Avoid over-fertilising, as this can result in excessive foliage growth at the expense of flowers.
  • Pests and Diseases: Caryopteris is generally pest-free and not prone to many diseases. However, keep an eye out for aphids or spider mites, which can occasionally affect the plant. If necessary, treat with insecticidal soap or a strong jet of water to dislodge any pests.
