Description

Overview of Corylus avellana 'Garibaldi'

Corylus avellana 'Garibaldi' is a compact, ornamental form of the common hazel, prized for its attractive foliage, manageable growth habit, and striking catkins in late winter. A cultivar of the European hazel, 'Garibaldi' brings architectural interest and seasonal variety to gardens. Unlike its larger relatives, this variety is more shrub-like, making it suitable for smaller gardens, mixed borders, and informal hedging.

With its decorative foliage and early-season catkins, Corylus avellana 'Garibaldi' offers both aesthetic and ecological value—attracting pollinators and providing a habitat for wildlife. It is also a hardy and reliable shrub that requires minimal care once established.

Planting & Positioning Guidelines

Corylus avellana 'Garibaldi' is a versatile shrub that adapts well to different garden conditions, provided it's planted in the right location and soil.

  • Light Requirements:

    • Prefers full sun to partial shade.

    • Best flowering and foliage colour achieved with good light exposure.

  • Soil Needs:

    • Grows in a wide range of soils but thrives in moist, well-drained, fertile soil.

    • Tolerant of clay and loamy soils; avoid overly waterlogged ground.

  • Ideal Positioning:

    • Plant in borders, cottage gardens, wildlife-friendly areas, or as part of a mixed shrub planting.

    • Can also be grown as part of a natural hedge or boundary planting.

  • Spacing:

    • Allow around 1.5–2 metres of space around the plant for healthy growth and airflow.

    • Suitable for planting in groups or as a standalone feature.

  • Planting Tips:

    • Plant in autumn or early spring when the soil is workable.

    • Add organic matter to the planting hole and water in well.

    • Apply mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Ongoing Care & Seasonal Maintenance

This is a low-maintenance shrub once established, making it a practical choice for many gardeners.

  • Watering:

    • Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish roots.

    • Once mature, only water during prolonged dry periods.

  • Feeding:

    • Feed in early spring with a general-purpose fertiliser to encourage healthy growth.

    • Mulch annually with compost or well-rotted manure to improve soil structure and fertility.

  • Pruning:

    • Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth starts.

    • Remove any damaged, crossing, or congested stems to maintain shape and health.

    • Can be coppiced every few years to rejuvenate the plant and promote dense regrowth.

  • Pests and Diseases:

    • Generally pest and disease resistant.

    • Occasionally affected by aphids or leaf spots, which are rarely serious.

    • Keep good air circulation to prevent fungal issues.

  • Winter Care:

    • Fully hardy and can withstand cold winters without protection.

    • Catkins may appear as early as late January, adding interest to the winter garden.

Garden Uses and Display Ideas

Corylus avellana 'Garibaldi' offers ornamental value throughout the year and fits into a wide range of garden styles.

  • Winter Interest:

    • Long yellow catkins appear in late winter to early spring, offering visual appeal and early pollen for bees.

  • Wildlife Benefits:

    • Attracts pollinators, especially in early spring.

    • Dense branches provide shelter for birds and small animals.

  • Compact Growth Habit:

    • More contained than traditional hazels, making it ideal for smaller gardens or urban spaces.

    • Can be kept tidy and shaped with light pruning.

  • Hedging and Screening:

    • Works well in informal hedging schemes or as a seasonal privacy screen.

    • Blends beautifully into native planting schemes or woodland-style gardens.

  • Companion Planting:

    • Combines well with other wildlife-friendly plants such as Cornus, Viburnum, or native grasses.

Corylus avellana 'Garibaldi' is an excellent choice for gardeners seeking a low-maintenance, wildlife-friendly shrub with distinctive seasonal features. Its compact size, resilience, and unique winter interest make it a valuable addition to almost any garden setting
