Corylus avellana 'Scooter' Care Guide

Corylus avellana 'Scooter', commonly known as the Hazel 'Scooter,' is a charming and versatile shrub, prized for its compact growth, decorative catkins, and edible nuts. This deciduous plant is perfect for adding structure and seasonal interest to your garden, offering a mix of aesthetic appeal and practical use.

Attractive Features of Corylus avellana 'Scooter'

Corylus avellana 'Scooter' is a compact variety of the common hazel, known for its dense, rounded form and stunning spring catkins. The catkins, which appear in late winter to early spring, are long, drooping, and golden-yellow, adding a splash of color when most other plants are still dormant. After the catkins, the shrub produces small, edible hazelnuts that are a treat for both wildlife and humans.

  • Height: 1.5-2 meters (5-6.5 feet)
  • Spread: 1-1.5 meters (3-5 feet)

This makes 'Scooter' an ideal choice for smaller gardens, mixed borders, or even as a low hedge. Its manageable size and beautiful foliage ensure it is a standout in any garden design.

Planting and Soil Requirements

Corylus avellana 'Scooter' is easy to grow and adapts well to a variety of soil types, making it a reliable choice for gardeners of all levels.

  • Soil Type: Prefers well-drained, fertile soil but can tolerate clay, loam, or sandy soils
  • pH Preference: Neutral to slightly acidic soil (pH 6.0-7.0)
  • Light Requirements: Thrives in full sun to partial shade

When planting, choose a location with plenty of sunlight to promote healthy growth and nut production. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and plant the shrub at the same depth it was in its container. Backfill with soil, firm it down, and water thoroughly to help the plant establish.

Watering and Fertilization

Once established, Corylus avellana 'Scooter' is relatively drought-tolerant but will perform best with regular watering, especially during dry periods.

  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, particularly during the first growing season
  • Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds

Fertilize in early spring with a balanced fertilizer to encourage healthy growth and abundant catkin and nut production. Avoid excessive feeding, as this can lead to overly lush foliage with fewer flowers and nuts.

Pruning and Maintenance

Corylus avellana 'Scooter' requires minimal maintenance, but light pruning will help maintain its shape and encourage better flowering and fruiting.

  • Pruning Time: Late winter to early spring, before new growth begins
  • Pruning Method: Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches to improve air circulation and overall plant health
  • Thinning: Thin out crowded areas to allow more light into the center of the plant

Regular pruning will keep your Corylus avellana 'Scooter' looking tidy and healthy, while also promoting more vigorous growth and better nut production.

Pest and Disease Control

This hazel variety is generally resistant to most pests and diseases, making it a low-maintenance choice for the garden. However, it is essential to keep an eye out for common issues and address them promptly.

  • Common Pests: Aphids and caterpillars may occasionally infest the plant
  • Common Diseases: Corylus avellana 'Scooter' is relatively disease-free but may occasionally suffer from powdery mildew or leaf spot

To prevent problems, ensure good air circulation around the plant and avoid overhead watering, which can lead to fungal issues. Regular monitoring and quick action will keep your plant healthy and thriving.

Seasonal Care and Harvesting

The Corylus avellana 'Scooter' provides year-round interest, with catkins in spring and nuts in late summer to early autumn. After the nuts have formed, you can harvest them by gently shaking the branches or collecting them from the ground.

  • Harvesting Nuts: Collect hazelnuts in late summer or early autumn when they start to drop naturally
  • Winter Care: Generally hardy, but a layer of mulch around the base will protect the roots in colder climates

With minimal care, your Corylus avellana 'Scooter' will reward you with beautiful catkins, delicious nuts, and a dense, attractive form that enhances your garden throughout the year.

Conclusion

Corylus avellana 'Scooter' is an excellent addition to any garden, offering both aesthetic and practical benefits. Its compact size, beautiful catkins, and tasty nuts make it a versatile and rewarding plant for gardeners of all experience levels. By following these care instructions, you can ensure that your 'Scooter' hazel thrives and continues to bring joy to your garden for many years to come
