- Spread: Can spread up to 2-3 metres (6.5-10 feet) wide, making it ideal for covering larger areas.
Maintenance Tips for Cotoneaster Horizontalis
While Cotoneaster horizontalis is known for its low-maintenance care requirements, there are a few things to consider to keep your plant healthy and looking its best.
Care and Maintenance:
- Pruning: Light pruning is recommended in early spring or late winter to remove any dead or damaged branches. You can also lightly shape the plant to keep it neat. If you're training it against a wall or in a specific shape, regular light pruning may be needed to maintain the structure.
- Watering: Once established, Cotoneaster horizontalis is fairly drought-tolerant and requires little additional watering. Water regularly during the first year after planting, but after establishment, only water during prolonged dry periods.
- Mulching: Add a layer of mulch around the base of the plant in spring to help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and regulate soil temperature.
- Fertilizing: Generally, this plant does not require heavy feeding. However, you can apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to promote healthy growth, particularly in poor soils.
- Pest and Disease Control: Cotoneaster horizontalis is typically pest-free but can sometimes attract aphids or scale insects. Keep an eye out for these and treat them with insecticidal soap or by encouraging natural predators like ladybirds. It can also occasionally suffer from fire blight, so regular pruning of deadwood can help prevent this.
