Planting and Location
-
Sunlight:
-
Prefers full sun for the best flowering performance and vibrant yellow blooms.
-
Tolerates light shade, but full sun will ensure the healthiest and most abundant flowers.
-
-
Soil:
-
Well-drained, slightly sandy or loamy soil is ideal.
-
Craspedia will thrive in soils with a pH range from slightly acidic to neutral.
-
Avoid heavy clay or overly wet soil, as it can lead to root rot.
-
-
Positioning:
-
Great for sunny borders, rock gardens, or cottage gardens.
-
Looks fantastic in mixed beds, alongside other drought-tolerant plants like lavender or ornamental grasses.
-
Can be grown in containers, provided the pot has adequate drainage.
-
-
Planting Time:
-
Best planted in spring or autumn when the weather is mild and the soil is workable.
-
For containers, it can be planted any time of the year, as long as temperatures are not too cold.
-
Watering and Feeding
-
Watering:
-
Craspedia globosa is highly drought-tolerant once established, requiring minimal watering.
-
During the first few months after planting, water regularly to establish strong roots.
-
Once established, water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.
-
Avoid waterlogging, which can lead to root rot.
-
-
Feeding:
-
Fertilizing is generally not necessary, but a light application of a balanced fertilizer in early spring can promote strong growth.
-
Use a slow-release fertilizer or liquid feed, particularly if the plant is grown in a container.
-
Over-fertilizing can lead to weak growth, so it's best to err on the side of caution.
-
-
Mulching:
-
Apply a thin layer of mulch around the base in early spring to help retain moisture and suppress weeds.
-
Avoid piling mulch directly against the plant's crown to prevent rot.
-
Pruning and Maintenance
-
Pruning:
-
Deadheading spent flowers encourages additional blooms and helps maintain a tidy appearance.
-
Prune back the stems after flowering has finished in late summer or early autumn to encourage new growth the following season.
-
Remove any dead or damaged stems to keep the plant looking neat.
-
-
Pest and Disease Control:
-
Craspedia is generally pest-resistant but may occasionally attract aphids or spider mites.
-
Regularly inspect the plant for pests and treat with insecticidal soap if needed.
-
Fungal diseases can be a concern in overly moist conditions, so it's essential to avoid overwatering.
-
-
Winter Care:
-
This plant is quite hardy and can survive frost, but it benefits from a layer of mulch during the winter months to protect its roots.
-
In colder climates, consider cutting back the plant in late autumn and applying a layer of mulch to help insulate the soil.
-
For container-grown plants, move them to a sheltered location or protect them with fleece during winter.
-
