Euphorbia char. 'Wulfenii'

  • Height: 'Wulfenii' typically grows to a height of 2 to 3 feet, with a spread of 2 to 4 feet, forming a robust clump of upright stems crowned with striking foliage and flower bracts. Its imposing stature makes it an excellent focal point or backdrop plant in garden compositions.
  • Foliage: The bold, blue-green leaves of 'Wulfenii' are lance-shaped and arranged along sturdy stems, creating a dramatic vertical accent in the landscape. The foliage remains evergreen in mild climates, providing year-round interest and structure to the garden.
  • Flower Bracts: In late spring to early summer, 'Wulfenii' produces large, showy flower bracts in chartreuse to golden-yellow hues, which stand out against the backdrop of its blue-green foliage. The bracts persist for several weeks, adding long-lasting color and visual appeal to the garden.
  • Architectural Form: 'Wulfenii' exhibits a statuesque, architectural form with upright stems that rise from a basal rosette of leaves. The plant's bold silhouette and vertical growth habit make it an ideal choice for adding height and structure to mixed borders, cottage gardens, and contemporary landscapes.

Care and Maintenance: Nurturing Your Euphorbia char. 'Wulfenii'

Euphorbia char. 'Wulfenii' is relatively low-maintenance and thrives in sunny, well-draining conditions. Here are some essential care tips to keep your 'Wulfenii' healthy and vibrant:

  • Sun Exposure: Plant 'Wulfenii' in a location with full sun to partial shade, where it receives at least six hours of direct sunlight per day. Adequate sunlight promotes compact growth and enhances flower production.
  • Soil Conditions: 'Wulfenii' prefers well-draining soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Amend heavy or clay soils with organic matter such as compost or aged manure to improve drainage and soil structure.
  • Watering: Water 'Wulfenii' regularly during the growing season, allowing the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering, as soggy soil can lead to root rot and other moisture-related issues.
  • Pruning: Remove spent flower bracts and stems to encourage continuous blooming and maintain the plant's shape and appearance. Use caution when handling 'Wulfenii,' as its milky sap may cause skin irritation.
  • Dividing: Every few years, divide mature clumps of 'Wulfenii' to rejuvenate the plant and prevent overcrowding. Dig up the clump in early spring or fall, carefully separate the individual stems or rosettes, and replant them in well-prepared soil.
