Maintenance Tips for Hebe ‘Matty Brown’
Caring for Hebe ‘Matty Brown’ is simple and requires minimal effort. Here are some essential maintenance tips to keep your shrub healthy and looking its best:
- Watering: Ensure regular watering during the establishment phase to help the plant settle in. Once established, Hebe ‘Matty Brown’ is drought-tolerant, but it benefits from occasional watering during prolonged dry spells to maintain healthy growth.
- Pruning: Lightly prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage bushy growth. Remove any dead or damaged stems to promote healthy growth. Avoid heavy pruning, as this can remove the flowering wood and reduce blooms in the following season.
- Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the plant in spring to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and improve soil quality. Ensure that the mulch does not touch the stem to prevent rot.
- Fertilizing: Fertilization is typically not necessary, as Hebe ‘Matty Brown’ thrives in less fertile soil. However, a balanced, slow-release fertiliser can be applied in early spring to promote healthy growth and blooming if desired.
- Pest and Disease Management: Hebe ‘Matty Brown’ is generally resistant to pests and diseases. However, regularly check for signs of aphids or powdery mildew. If detected, treat promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
