Maintenance Tips for Hydrangea 'Barbara Vickie'
Regular Care
- Watering: Hydrangea 'Barbara Vickie' requires regular watering to keep the soil consistently moist. Avoid waterlogged conditions, as they can lead to root rot. Mulch around the base of the plant to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.
- Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support growth and flowering. Avoid over-fertilizing, as this can result in lush foliage at the expense of blooms.
- Pruning: Prune the plant in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Remove dead or damaged stems and shape the plant as needed. Pruning encourages strong growth and helps maintain the plant's shape.
Seasonal Care
- Spring: In early spring, inspect the plant for any winter damage and prune as necessary. Apply a layer of mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
- Summer: Water regularly during dry periods and deadhead spent blooms to encourage continuous flowering. Monitor for pests, such as aphids or spider mites, and treat as needed with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
- Autumn: Allow the plant to naturally prepare for winter by reducing watering and stopping fertilization. Protect the base with a layer of mulch to insulate the roots during colder months.
- Winter: In colder regions, consider covering the plant with burlap or a frost cloth to protect it from harsh winter winds and freezing temperatures.
