How to Plant and Care for Hydrangea Macrophylla 'Marine'

Planting Instructions

  1. Choose the Right Location: Select a site with partial shade to full sun. Hydrangeas prefer morning sun and afternoon shade to prevent leaf scorch.

  2. Prepare the Soil: Ensure the soil is rich, well-draining, and slightly acidic. Amend with organic matter, such as compost or peat moss, to improve soil structure.

  3. Planting: Dig a hole twice as wide and as deep as the root ball. Place the plant in the hole, ensuring the crown is level with the soil surface. Backfill with soil and water thoroughly to establish roots.

  4. Spacing: Space plants 90-120 cm (3-4 feet) apart to allow for air circulation and growth.

Maintenance Tips

Proper maintenance is crucial for keeping your Hydrangea macrophylla 'Marine' healthy and flourishing. Follow these care tips for the best results:

Watering

  • Frequency: Water deeply once a week, increasing frequency during dry spells or extreme heat.
  • Method: Water at the base of the plant to avoid wetting the foliage, which can lead to fungal diseases.

Fertilizing

  • Timing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support new growth.
  • pH Adjustment: To encourage blue blooms, apply an acidifying fertilizer or aluminum sulfate to lower soil pH. For pink blooms, use lime to raise soil pH.

Pruning

  • Deadheading: Remove spent blooms to encourage new flower production and maintain a tidy appearance.
  • Cutting Back: In late winter or early spring, prune lightly to shape the plant and remove dead or damaged wood.

Pest and Disease Control

  • Monitoring: Hydrangeas can be susceptible to aphids, spider mites, and powdery mildew. Monitor for pests and treat with insecticidal soap or horticultural oil as needed.
  • Disease Prevention: Ensure good air circulation and avoid overcrowding to reduce the risk of fungal infections.
