Growing Conditions and Size

Its compact size also makes it an ideal candidate for low hedging or filling in gaps in flower beds and borders.
- Position: Full sun or partial shade.
- Soil Type: Prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil but will tolerate poorer soils.
- Height: 100-120cm (3-4 feet).
- Spread: 120-150cm (4-5 feet).
This compact, mound-forming shrub offers dense coverage, making it suitable for filling larger spaces or adding texture to smaller garden plots.
Maintenance Tips for Hypericum 'Hidcote'
Hypericum 'Hidcote' is extremely easy to care for, requiring little more than basic pruning and occasional watering in dry spells. Below are some simple tips to help keep your shrub looking its best:
- Pruning: Lightly prune in early spring to remove any dead, damaged, or diseased wood. You can also cut back the plant by a third to maintain its shape and promote vigorous new growth. Avoid hard pruning into old wood, as this can reduce flowering.
- Watering: Water well during the first year of planting to help the shrub establish a strong root system. Once established, Hypericum 'Hidcote' is drought-tolerant but will benefit from occasional watering during extended dry periods.
- Mulching: Apply a mulch of well-rotted organic matter in the spring to help retain moisture and suppress weeds. This will also improve the overall health of the soil around the shrub.
- Feeding: While not a heavy feeder, applying a balanced fertiliser in early spring will encourage healthy growth and enhance flowering.
- Pest and Disease Resistance: Hypericum 'Hidcote' is generally free from pests and diseases. However, in overly wet conditions, it may suffer from rust or leaf spot, which can be treated with a fungicide.
By following these simple care guidelines, your Hypericum 'Hidcote' will reward you with a vibrant display of flowers and healthy growth throughout the year.
