Planting and Placement Tips
Correct planting and positioning are key to getting the most from your Impatiens NG 'Tamarinda' Mix.
-
Location:
-
Prefers partial shade to filtered sun. Unlike traditional impatiens, New Guinea types can tolerate more sun, especially in cooler climates.
-
In hotter regions, provide some afternoon shade to prevent leaf scorch.
-
-
Soil:
-
Requires moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Avoid dry, sandy soils or heavy clay unless amended with compost.
-
-
Spacing:
-
Allow approximately 25–35cm between plants to promote air circulation and reduce the risk of fungal diseases.
-
-
Container planting:
-
Performs beautifully in containers with a high-quality, moisture-retentive compost. Make sure pots have adequate drainage holes.
-
-
Planting time:
-
Best planted after the last frost in spring when the soil has warmed up.
-
Care and Maintenance
Impatiens NG 'Tamarinda' Mix is relatively easy to care for, provided their moisture and nutritional needs are met.
-
Watering:
-
Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. These plants are sensitive to drying out, especially in sunny positions or containers.
-
In hot weather, daily watering may be required, particularly for potted plants.
-
-
Feeding:
-
Feed every two to three weeks with a high-potassium liquid fertiliser (such as tomato feed) to encourage lush blooms and strong growth.
-
-
Deadheading:
-
Although self-cleaning, you can gently remove faded blooms to keep plants tidy and promote continuous flowering.
-
-
Pruning and shaping:
-
Light pinching of leggy stems will help maintain a compact and full appearance throughout the season.
-
-
Pests and diseases:
-
Generally pest-resistant, though keep an eye out for aphids and spider mites in dry conditions.
-
Ensure proper spacing and air circulation to prevent mildew or fungal issues.
-
-
Winter care:
-
Typically grown as an annual in most climates. In frost-free areas or indoors, they can survive year-round.
-
To overwinter, take cuttings or move plants indoors before temperatures fall below 10°C.
-
