How to Plant and Care for Lavandula Angustifolia 'Munstead'

    Planting Instructions

    1. Choose the Right Location: Select a site with full sun exposure. Lavender thrives in sunny locations and requires at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.

    2. Prepare the Soil: Ensure the soil is well-draining and slightly alkaline. Amend heavy clay soils with sand or gravel to improve drainage and prevent root rot.

    3. Planting: Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and slightly deeper. Place the plant in the hole, ensuring the crown is level with the soil surface. Backfill with soil and water thoroughly to settle the roots.

    4. Spacing: Space plants 45 cm to 60 cm (18 to 24 inches) apart to allow for proper air circulation and growth.

    Maintenance Tips

Proper maintenance is essential to keep your Lavandula angustifolia 'Munstead' healthy and thriving. Follow these care tips for optimal results:

    Watering

    • Frequency: Water newly planted lavender regularly until established. Once established, water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.
    • Method: Water at the base of the plant to prevent fungal diseases and avoid overhead watering.

    Fertilizing

    • Timing: Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth begins.
    • Amount: Use sparingly, as over-fertilization can lead to reduced bloom production and leggy growth.

    Pruning

    • Deadheading: Regularly remove spent flower spikes to encourage continuous blooming and maintain a tidy appearance.
    • Cutting Back: In late autumn or early spring, prune the plant by cutting back one-third of the previous year's growth to promote bushier growth and prevent woody stems.

    Pest and Disease Control

    • Monitoring: Lavender is generally resistant to pests and diseases, but monitor for signs of aphids or root rot.
    • Disease Prevention: Ensure good air circulation and avoid waterlogged soils to reduce the risk of fungal infections.
