Maintenance Tips for Lavandula angustifolia 'Vera'
Caring for Lavandula angustifolia 'Vera' ensures vigorous growth and abundant flowering. Follow these maintenance tips to cultivate a thriving lavender plant:
- Planting Location: Choose a sunny site with well-drained soil. Lavandula 'Vera' thrives in full sun, which enhances flower production and fragrance.
- Soil: Prefers sandy or gravelly soils with good drainage. Amend heavy soils with organic matter or sand to improve drainage.
- Watering: Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Once established, reduce watering frequency, as lavender is drought-tolerant.
- Fertilizing: Minimal feeding is required. Apply a light application of a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring if necessary.
- Pruning: Prune annually after flowering to maintain shape and encourage bushy growth. Cut back about one-third of the plant, avoiding cutting into old wood.
- Pest and Disease Management: Generally pest-resistant, but watch for root rot in poorly drained soils. Ensure proper spacing for air circulation to prevent fungal issues.
- Winter Care: In colder climates, provide winter protection by mulching around the base of the plant. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot during wet winters.
