How to Plant Sarpomira Seed Potatoes
Pre-Planting Preparation
- Chitting: Start by chitting your Sarpomira seed potatoes 6–8 weeks before planting. Place them in a cool, light area with the “eyes” facing upwards. This helps stimulate sprout growth for a strong start.
- Soil Preparation: Choose a sunny, well-drained area with fertile soil. Work organic compost or well-rotted manure into the soil to provide the necessary nutrients.
Planting Instructions
- When to Plant: Plant your Sarpomira seed potatoes in late spring, around mid to late April, once the risk of frost has passed.
- Planting Depth and Spacing:
- Space seed potatoes 30–40cm (12–16 inches) apart to allow for adequate growth.
- Space rows 75–90cm (30–35 inches) apart to accommodate the spread of the plant.
- Plant seed potatoes 10–15cm (4–6 inches) deep, with the sprouts facing upwards.
Maintenance Tips for Sarpomira Potatoes
Watering and Feeding
- Watering: Sarpomira potatoes require consistent moisture, especially during dry spells. Water regularly to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged. Avoid overhead watering, as it can promote the spread of diseases.
- Feeding: Apply a balanced fertilizer or potato feed during the growing season to promote healthy growth. You can use a high-potassium fertilizer to encourage the development of tubers.
Earthing Up and Mulching
- Earthing Up: Once the plants reach a height of around 20cm (8 inches), mound soil around the stems to help protect the developing tubers from sunlight, preventing them from turning green and toxic. Repeat the earthing-up process as the plants continue to grow.
- Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch, such as straw or compost, to keep weeds at bay, retain moisture, and reduce the risk of soil erosion.
Pest and Disease Control
- Blight Resistance: One of the main benefits of Sarpomira potatoes is their resistance to blight, but be sure to remove any affected leaves or tubers to minimize the risk of infection.
- Pests: Watch out for common potato pests like aphids and wireworms. Companion planting with marigolds or garlic can help deter these pests naturally.
- Weeding: Keep the area around the plants free from weeds to prevent competition for nutrients and water.
Harvesting and Storing Sarpomira Potatoes
When to Harvest
- Sarpomira potatoes are typically ready for harvest 18-20 weeks after planting.
- You will know they are ready when the foliage turns yellow and begins to die back.
- Allow the tubers to mature fully in the soil before harvesting to ensure maximum size and quality.
How to Harvest
- Carefully lift the tubers using a garden fork, being cautious not to damage the skins.
- Let the harvested potatoes dry on the surface for a few hours to help the skins harden.
Storing Sarpomira Potatoes
- Cure the harvested potatoes in a cool, dark, and dry place for 1-2 weeks to help them develop their full storage potential.
- Store in breathable containers, such as mesh bags or wooden boxes, in a frost-free environment. Proper storage will keep your Sarpomira potatoes fresh for months.
