MALUS JOHN DOWNIE
Short description
Malus ‘John Downie’ is a vigorous, small deciduous tree, valued for year-round garden interest and the quality of its fruit. The tree is bushy with a shapely oval head, and the green leaves develop yellow, red and orange tints in autumn. Profuse white blossom opens from pink buds in April and May is followed by heavy crops of large, egg-shaped, bright red and orange fruits, 3-4 cm long, with a refreshing flavour, particularly good for crab-apple jelly. Any left unpicked will persist on the tree until softened by frost, when the birds will appreciate them. Self-fertile, and a good pollinator for apples in Flowering Groups 3, 4 and 5.

Maintenance Tips for Malus John Downie
- Soil Requirements: Malus John Downie thrives in well-drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH level. Ensure proper soil preparation by incorporating organic matter and improving drainage if necessary.
- Sunlight: This crabapple tree performs best in full sun, receiving at least six hours of direct sunlight daily. Choose a planting location that provides ample sunlight for optimal growth, flowering, and fruit production.
- Watering: Regular watering is important during the first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, Malus John Downie is relatively drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering during extended dry periods.
- Pruning: Minimal pruning is necessary for this tree. Remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches during the dormant season to maintain its shape and overall health. Light pruning can be done after flowering to shape the tree if desired.
- Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the tree, taking care to avoid direct contact with the trunk. Mulching helps conserve soil moisture, suppress weed growth, and insulate the roots from temperature extremes.
- Pest and Disease Control: Malus John Downie is generally resistant to common pests and diseases. However, regular monitoring is recommended to identify and address any issues promptly. If necessary, consult with a gardening professional for appropriate treatments.
