Planting and Soil Requirements

  • Planting Location: Prefers full sun to partial shade. For optimal growth and blooming, plant in a location that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.
  • Soil Type: Thrives in well-drained soil. Ideal soil types include loamy or sandy soils. Ensure the soil is well-draining to prevent waterlogging.
  • Soil pH: Prefers a neutral to slightly alkaline soil pH. Aim for a pH range between 6.0 and 8.0.
  • Planting Depth: Plant so that the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Avoid planting too deep to prevent root rot.
  • Spacing: Space plants 12-18 inches (30-45 cm) apart to allow for their mature spread and to ensure good air circulation.

Watering and Fertilization

  • Watering: Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry spells. However, avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
  • Drought Tolerance: Once established, Nepeta x faassenii 'Purrsian Blue' has good drought tolerance but benefits from occasional watering during prolonged dry periods.
  • Fertilization: Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring. An all-purpose garden fertilizer or one formulated for flowering plants is suitable.

Light and Temperature Requirements

  • Light Requirements: Requires full sun to partial shade. For best flowering results, provide at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.
  • Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 4-8. Thrives in a range of temperatures but may need protection in extreme cold.
  • Frost Tolerance: Tolerates light frosts but may require winter protection in colder climates. Mulch around the base in late fall to insulate the roots.

Pruning and Maintenance

  • Deadheading: Remove spent flower spikes to encourage continuous blooming and to maintain a neat appearance.
  • Pruning: Trim back the plant after the first flush of blooms to promote a second bloom period and to maintain a compact shape.
  • Maintenance: Regularly remove any dead or damaged foliage to improve plant health and appearance. Monitor for pests and diseases.

Pests and Diseases

  • Pests: Generally resistant to pests but may occasionally attract aphids or spider mites. Treat with insecticidal soap or neem oil if necessary.
  • Diseases: Susceptible to fungal diseases such as powdery mildew if the plant is grown in poorly-drained soil or if overcrowded. Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering.
  • Preventative Measures: Avoid watering in the evening to reduce humidity around the plant. Maintain proper spacing to improve air flow and minimize disease risk.

Propagation

  • Division: Can be propagated by dividing established clumps in early spring or fall. Ensure each division has a portion of roots and shoots.
  • Cuttings: Propagate from stem cuttings taken in late spring or early summer. Root cuttings in a well-draining medium and keep them in a warm, bright location.
  • Seed Propagation: Less common but possible. Start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date, then transplant seedlings outdoors after the risk of frost has passed.

Companion Planting and Garden Uses

  • Companion Plants: Pairs well with other sun-loving perennials and annuals such as Echinacea, Rudbeckia, and lavender. Also complements ornamental grasses and other flowering plants.
  • Ornamental Use: Ideal for adding color to garden beds, borders, and containers. Works well in mixed plantings and as a ground cover.
  • Attracting Pollinators: Attracts bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects, making it a great choice for pollinator-friendly gardens.

Winter Care and Overwintering

  • Winter Dormancy: Goes dormant in winter. The foliage may die back, but the roots will survive if properly protected.
  • Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch around the base in late fall to insulate the roots and protect them from severe temperatures.
  • Protection: In colder climates, consider covering the plant with a frost cloth or additional mulch during extreme winter weather.
