Onion 'Sturon' Planting & Care Guide
Onion 'Sturon' is a popular and reliable variety known for its excellent storage qualities and consistent yields. This hardy, disease-resistant variety produces medium to large golden-brown bulbs with a firm texture and mild flavour, making it perfect for cooking, salads, and long-term storage.
Grown from sets (immature onion bulbs) rather than seeds, Onion 'Sturon' is easy to cultivate, making it a favourite among both beginner and experienced gardeners. It thrives in well-drained soil and requires minimal maintenance.
Key Features of Onion 'Sturon'
- Height: Grows up to 30-45cm (12-18 inches) tall

- Bulb Size: Medium to large, golden-brown with firm white flesh
- Harvest Time: Mid to late summer (July - August)
- Storage: Excellent – can be stored for months
How to Plant Onion 'Sturon'
Choosing the Right Location
- Prefers a sunny position with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.
- Requires well-drained, fertile soil for the best results.
- Avoid areas where onions or related crops (garlic, leeks) were grown in the past year to reduce disease risk.
Soil Preparation
- Best pH: Slightly acidic to neutral (pH 6.0 - 7.0).
- Enrich the soil with organic compost or well-rotted manure a few weeks before planting.
- Ensure the soil is light and crumbly – heavy, compacted soil can lead to misshapen bulbs.
Planting Instructions
-
When to Plant:
- Plant sets in early to mid-spring (March to April) when the soil is workable.
-
Spacing:
- Plant onions 10-15cm (4-6 inches) apart in rows 30cm (12 inches) apart to allow airflow.
-
How to Plant:
- Push each set gently into the soil, so just the tip is visible above the surface.
- Do not plant too deep, as this can prevent proper bulb development.
-
Watering After Planting:
- Water lightly to help establish roots but avoid waterlogging.
Maintenance Tips for Onion 'Sturon'
Watering & Feeding
- Keep soil moist but not waterlogged – onions dislike sitting in wet conditions.
- During dry periods, water once a week to encourage bulb formation.
- Avoid overwatering once bulbs start forming, as too much moisture can cause rot.
- Apply a high-potassium fertilizer (e.g., liquid seaweed feed) every 3-4 weeks to encourage strong growth.
Weeding & Mulching
- Regularly remove weeds, as onions do not compete well with them.
- Apply a thin layer of mulch (straw, grass clippings) around the plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Pest & Disease Control
- Onion Fly: Use netting or fleece to protect young plants from onion fly infestations.
- Downy Mildew: Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to prevent fungal diseases.
- Root Rot: Avoid planting in waterlogged soil to prevent rot and fungal issues.
Harvesting & Storing
-
When to Harvest:
- Onions are ready to harvest when the foliage turns yellow and starts to flop over (usually July - August).
- Lift bulbs carefully using a fork or trowel, avoiding damage.
-
Drying & Storing:
- Lay onions in a warm, dry, and well-ventilated area for two weeks to cure.
- Once dried, store in mesh bags or wooden crates in a cool, dry place.
- Well-cured 'Sturon' onions can be stored for several months without sprouting.
