Planting and Positioning
Getting your Osteospermum Mix off to a good start is key to enjoying a long season of blooms. Here’s how to plant and position them for best results:
-
Light requirements:
-
Full sun is essential for healthy growth and prolific blooming. The flowers respond directly to light, opening when it's sunny and closing during cloudy weather or at night.
-
-
Soil preference:
-
Prefers well-drained soil. Avoid heavy clay or overly damp conditions as these can lead to root rot.
-
A moderately fertile soil with added compost or organic matter is ideal.
-
-
Ideal planting time:
-
Late spring, after the danger of frost has passed.
-
-
Spacing:
-
Allow about 20–30cm between plants to ensure good air circulation and avoid fungal issues.
-
-
Containers and baskets:
-
Osteospermum thrive in pots and hanging baskets. Use a good quality multipurpose compost with added grit or sand for improved drainage.
-
Ongoing Care and Maintenance
Once planted, Osteospermum Mix requires minimal maintenance, making them perfect for both new and experienced gardeners.
-
Watering:
-
Water regularly when first planted. Once established, they are fairly drought-tolerant.
-
In containers, they will need more frequent watering, especially in hot weather.
-
-
Feeding:
-
Apply a balanced liquid feed every two to three weeks during the flowering period to encourage continual blooming.
-
-
Deadheading:
-
Regularly remove spent flowers to prolong blooming and encourage new buds to form.
-
-
Pruning:
-
In mid to late summer, lightly trim back leggy growth to maintain a compact shape and encourage fresh flowering.
-
-
Winter care:
-
In mild climates, Osteospermum can survive over winter. Apply a mulch around the base in autumn to protect the roots from frost.
-
In colder regions, treat them as annuals or bring potted plants indoors before the first frost.
-
-
Pests and diseases:
-
Generally pest-free, though aphids and slugs may occasionally be an issue. Treat early with eco-friendly solutions if needed.
-
Ensure good air circulation to prevent powdery mildew.
-
