Maintenance Guide for Phlox subulata ‘Fabulous Rose’
Phlox subulata ‘Fabulous Rose’ is a low-maintenance plant, ideal for gardeners who want a reliable and long-lasting display of colour without the need for constant attention. Follow these simple care tips to keep your plant looking its best:
- Watering: Water regularly during the plant's establishment phase. Once established, Phlox subulata is drought-tolerant and requires only occasional watering during prolonged dry spells. Ensure the soil remains well-drained to prevent root rot.
- Pruning: After the flowering period, trim back the plant to maintain a neat, compact shape. Light pruning in late spring encourages fresh growth and helps the plant retain its dense habit. You can also deadhead faded blooms to prolong the flowering season.
- Fertilizing: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support strong growth and abundant blooms. Avoid over-fertilizing, as too much nitrogen can encourage leafy growth at the expense of flowers.
- Mulching: A light layer of organic mulch in early spring can help conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and improve soil quality. Be sure to keep the mulch away from the plant’s crown to prevent fungal diseases.
- Pest and Disease Control: Phlox subulata is generally pest-free but may occasionally suffer from powdery mildew in overly humid conditions. To prevent this, ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering. Aphids and spider mites may be an issue in some cases but can be treated with organic insecticides if necessary.
