- Description: Ribes sanguineum 'King Edward VII', commonly known as the Red Flowering Currant, is a deciduous shrub prized for its showy clusters of deep red to crimson flowers that bloom profusely in early spring. The pendulous racemes emerge before the foliage, creating a striking contrast against the bare branches. 'King Edward VII' also boasts bright green, lobed leaves that provide a lush backdrop for the vibrant blooms. This cultivar is valued for its ornamental appeal, wildlife attraction, and ease of cultivation.
- Height: Typically grows to a height of 6 to 8 feet at maturity, forming an upright, spreading habit that fills out beautifully in the landscape.
- Spread: Exhibits a moderate growth rate and spreads to approximately 4 to 6 feet, creating a dense and bushy appearance that enhances its visual impact.
Maintenance and Care:
- Planting: Choose a sunny to partially shaded location with well-drained soil for optimal growth and flowering. Plant Ribes sanguineum 'King Edward VII' in early spring or early autumn, ensuring the root ball is level with the surrounding soil surface. Provide adequate space for the shrub to mature, considering its height and spread.
- Watering: Maintain regular watering, especially during periods of drought or dry weather, to ensure adequate soil moisture. Water deeply at the base of the shrub, avoiding wetting the foliage to prevent fungal diseases. Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plant to retain moisture and suppress weed growth.
- Pruning: Prune Ribes sanguineum 'King Edward VII' after flowering to remove any dead, damaged, or crossing branches and promote a more open, airy growth habit. Lightly shaping the shrub can enhance its aesthetic appeal and maintain its desired size and form.
- Fertilization: Apply a balanced fertilizer formulated for flowering shrubs in early spring to provide essential nutrients and encourage healthy growth and flowering. Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for application rates and frequency, and avoid over-fertilizing, which can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of flowering.
