Planting Rosa 'Ghislaine de Féligonde'

Ideal Growing Conditions

  • Sunlight: Prefers full sun but will perform well in partial shade.
  • Soil: Thrives in well-drained, fertile soil enriched with organic matter.
  • Position: Ideal for walls, fences, or arches, and can even be grown as a shrub.

Planting Tips

  1. Preparation: Dig a hole twice the width and depth of the root ball.
  2. Soil Improvement: Mix compost or well-rotted manure into the soil to improve drainage and nutrient levels.
  3. Planting: Position the rose so the graft union is just above soil level.
  4. Watering and Mulching: Water thoroughly after planting and add a 5 cm (2-inch) layer of mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  5. Support: Attach young stems to a trellis, arch, or wall to train it as a climber.

Maintenance for Rosa 'Ghislaine de Féligonde'

Watering

  • Water deeply once or twice a week during dry periods, ensuring the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged.
  • Avoid watering leaves to reduce the risk of fungal diseases.

Feeding

  • Feed with a balanced rose fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges.
  • Apply a second feed after the first flush of flowers to encourage repeat blooms.

Pruning

  • Prune in late winter or early spring while the plant is dormant.
  • Remove dead, damaged, or weak stems, and shape the plant by cutting back flowering shoots to strong buds.
  • Train new canes horizontally on supports to promote more flowers.

Mulching

  • Mulch in spring with organic matter, such as compost or well-rotted manure, to conserve moisture and add nutrients.
  • Keep mulch away from the stems to prevent rot.

Height and Spread

  • Height: Reaches 3–4 meters (10–13 feet) when trained as a climber.
  • Spread: Spans approximately 2–3 meters (6–10 feet).

Seasonal Care

Spring

  • Apply fertilizer and mulch to support new growth.
  • Tie in new shoots to supports for a well-trained structure.

Summer

  • Deadhead spent blooms to prolong flowering.
  • Maintain consistent watering and monitor for pests like aphids or greenflies.

Autumn

  • Allow the final blooms to fade naturally to enjoy rose hips for winter interest.
  • Reduce watering as the plant prepares for dormancy.

Winter

  • Protect roots with a layer of mulch or compost in colder climates.
  • Perform light pruning to remove any weak or damaged stems.

Common Issues and Solutions

Black Spot

  • Cause: Fungal disease often due to poor air circulation or damp conditions.
  • Solution: Remove affected leaves and apply a fungicide. Ensure adequate spacing for airflow.

Powdery Mildew

  • Cause: Occurs in humid conditions with poor ventilation.
  • Solution: Spray with a rose-specific fungicide and water only the soil, not the foliage.

Weak Blooming

  • Cause: Insufficient sunlight or poor nutrition.
  • Solution: Ensure the plant gets at least 4–6 hours of sunlight and apply a rose fertilizer.
