Overview of Salvia microphylla 'Pink Lips'

Salvia microphylla 'Pink Lips' is a charming perennial herbaceous plant prized for its profusion of tubular flowers that attract hummingbirds and butterflies throughout the blooming season. Native to Mexico, this variety of Salvia is known for its compact growth habit, aromatic foliage, and ability to thrive in various garden conditions. 'Pink Lips' is a popular choice for borders, containers, and rock gardens due to its extended flowering period and low maintenance requirements.

Key Characteristics

  • Scientific Name: Salvia microphylla 'Pink Lips'
  • Common Name: Pink Lips Salvia
  • Family: Lamiaceae
  • Origin: Mexico
  • Height: 45-60 cm (18-24 inches)
  • Spread: 30-45 cm (12-18 inches)
  • Flower Color: Pink with white lower lip
  • Foliage Color: Green, aromatic
  • Blooming Season: Late spring to fall
  • Hardiness Zones: USDA zones 8-10

Planting and Growing Conditions

Ideal Soil and Location

  • Soil Type: Prefers well-draining soil with a neutral to slightly acidic pH (6.0-7.0). Sandy loam or loamy soils are ideal. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
  • Sun Exposure: Thrives in full sun to partial shade. For best results, provide at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. In hotter climates, afternoon shade can help protect the plant from intense sun.
  • Planting Location: Suitable for garden beds, borders, containers, and rock gardens. Also suitable for coastal gardens due to its tolerance to salt spray.

Watering and Feeding

  • Watering: Water regularly during the growing season to keep the soil evenly moist. Once established, 'Pink Lips' is moderately drought-tolerant but benefits from occasional deep watering, especially during hot, dry periods.
  • Feeding: Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to promote healthy growth and abundant flowering. Avoid over-fertilizing, as excessive nitrogen can result in lush foliage at the expense of flowers.

Temperature and Humidity

  • Temperature: Hardy in USDA zones 8-10. 'Pink Lips' can tolerate temperatures down to about -6°C (20°F) with protection. In colder zones, consider growing in containers for easier winter protection.
  • Humidity: Tolerates a range of humidity levels but prefers moderate humidity. Good air circulation helps prevent fungal diseases, especially in humid climates.

Maintenance and Care

Pruning and Deadheading

  • Pruning: Prune lightly in early spring to remove dead or damaged growth and encourage new shoots. Deadhead spent flowers regularly to prolong blooming and maintain a tidy appearance.
  • Cutting Back: Cut back hard in late winter or early spring to rejuvenate the plant and promote vigorous new growth. This can also prevent the plant from becoming leggy over time.

Pests and Diseases

  • Pests: Generally resistant to pests, but keep an eye out for aphids, spider mites, and whiteflies. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
  • Diseases: Susceptible to fungal diseases such as powdery mildew and root rot in poorly drained soils. Ensure good air circulation and avoid overhead watering to minimize these issues.

Winter Care

  • In-ground Plants: Provide a layer of mulch around the base of the plant in colder zones to protect the roots from freezing temperatures. Remove mulch in spring after the last frost.
  • Container Plants: Move containers to a sheltered location or indoors during the winter months. Reduce watering but do not let the soil completely dry out.

Propagation

  • Seeds: Sow seeds indoors in early spring, then transplant seedlings outdoors after the last frost. Seeds can also be sown directly in the garden in late spring.
  • Cuttings: Take softwood cuttings in late spring or early summer. Remove lower leaves, dip in rooting hormone, and place in a well-draining potting mix. Keep cuttings moist until roots develop.
  • Division: Divide mature clumps in early spring. Dig up the plant and carefully separate the root ball into sections with healthy shoots. Replant divisions immediately in prepared soil.

Companion Planting and Landscaping Uses

Companion Plants

  • Ideal Companions: Pair with other sun-loving perennials such as lavender, catmint (Nepeta), Echinacea, and ornamental grasses. 'Pink Lips' complements plants with contrasting foliage colors and textures.
  • Arrangement: Use in mixed borders, herb gardens, butterfly gardens, and cottage gardens. Also suitable for containers on patios and balconies.

Landscape Uses

  • Borders and Edging: Create colorful borders and edging along garden paths and driveways.
  • Containers: Grow in containers of appropriate size to display on patios, decks, and balconies. Combine with other drought-tolerant plants for a vibrant container garden.
  • Rock Gardens: Thrives in rocky, well-draining soils typical of rock gardens. Adds color and attracts pollinators to these landscape features.

Benefits and Uses

  • Attracts Pollinators: The tubular flowers are highly attractive to hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees, contributing to garden biodiversity.
  • Extended Blooming Period: 'Pink Lips' blooms prolifically from late spring through fall, providing continuous color in the garden.
  • Low Maintenance: Requires minimal care once established, making it suitable for novice gardeners and busy gardeners alike.
  • Aromatic Foliage: The foliage emits a pleasant aroma when touched or brushed, adding sensory appeal to the garden.
  • Versatile: Suitable for a variety of garden styles and uses, from formal gardens to wildflower meadows.

Tips for Success

  • Planting Depth: Plant at the same depth as it was in the nursery container, ensuring the crown is slightly above soil level to prevent rot.
  • Mulching: Apply a layer of organic mulch around the plant to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and insulate roots.
  • Regular Monitoring: Check regularly for pests, diseases, and water needs, especially during hot, dry periods.
  • Pruning Techniques: Use sharp, clean pruners to make precise cuts and avoid damaging the plant.

By following these care guidelines, you can enjoy the beauty and benefits of Salvia microphylla 'Pink Lips' in your garden year after year. This versatile and attractive perennial adds vibrant color and attracts beneficial wildlife, enhancing the overall appeal of your outdoor space
