    Key Characteristics

    • Scientific Name: Salvia greggii 'Salgoon® Lake Flamingo'
    • Common Name: Autumn Sage, Lake Flamingo Salvia
    • Family: Lamiaceae
    • Origin: Southwestern United States and Mexico
    • Height: 60-75 cm (24-30 inches)
    • Spread: 45-60 cm (18-24 inches)
    • Flower Color: Bright pink
    • Blooming Season: Late spring to autumn
    • Foliage: Small, aromatic green leaves
    • Hardiness Zones: USDA zones 7-10

    Planting and Growing Conditions

    Ideal Soil and Location

    • Soil Type: Prefers well-draining soil with a sandy or loamy texture. Slightly acidic to neutral pH is ideal.
    • Sun Exposure: Thrives in full sun. Requires at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal growth and flowering.
    • Planting Location: Suitable for garden beds, borders, and containers. Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal diseases.

    Watering and Feeding

    • Watering: Water regularly but allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Drought-tolerant once established but benefits from consistent moisture during the growing season.
    • Feeding: Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring. Supplement with a liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the blooming season for optimal performance.

    Temperature and Humidity

    • Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures between 20-30°C (68-86°F). Can tolerate cooler temperatures down to -10°C (14°F) with protection.
    • Humidity: Tolerates a range of humidity levels but prefers moderate humidity. Good air circulation helps prevent fungal issues.

    Maintenance and Care

    Pruning and Deadheading

    • Pruning: Lightly prune in early spring to maintain shape and encourage bushier growth. Avoid heavy pruning as it can stress the plant.
    • Deadheading: Regularly remove spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming and maintain a tidy appearance. Pinch off the flowers just above the nearest set of leaves.

    Pests and Diseases

    • Common Pests: Generally pest-resistant but can occasionally be affected by aphids and whiteflies. Use insecticidal soap or neem oil to manage infestations.
    • Diseases: Susceptible to powdery mildew and root rot in poorly draining soil. Ensure proper watering practices and good air circulation to minimize disease risk.

    Winter Care

    • In-ground Plants: In USDA zones 7-10, provide winter protection with mulch. In colder climates, treat as an annual or bring indoors.
    • Potted Plants: Move containers to a sheltered location or indoors during severe cold spells. Reduce watering during the dormant period.

    Propagation

    • Cuttings: The most reliable method of propagation. Take softwood cuttings in late spring or early summer. Remove lower leaves and root in a well-draining potting mix.
    • Seeds: Can be grown from seed, although this method is less common. Sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost or directly in the garden after the danger of frost has passed.
    • Division: Can be divided in early spring, although this method is less common due to the plant's woody nature.

    Companion Planting and Landscaping Uses

    Companion Plants

    • Ideal Companions: Pairs well with other sun-loving perennials and annuals such as echinacea, coreopsis, and gaillardia. The bright pink flowers contrast beautifully with silver or grey foliage plants like lavender and artemisia.
    • Arrangement: Use in mixed borders, containers, or as a standalone feature. Creates a striking display when planted en masse or along pathways.

    Landscape Uses

    • Borders and Edging: Ideal for creating colorful borders and edging along pathways and garden beds.
    • Containers: Suitable for container gardening on patios, balconies, and decks. Mix with other flowering plants for a vibrant container display.
    • Rock Gardens: Adds color and texture to rock gardens and dry landscapes.

    Benefits and Uses

    • Aesthetic Appeal: Adds vibrant color and unique texture to gardens and landscapes with its bright pink flowers.
    • Long Blooming Season: Provides continuous blooms from late spring through autumn, enhancing garden aesthetics for an extended period.
    • Drought Tolerance: Once established, 'Salgoon® Lake Flamingo' is drought-tolerant, making it an excellent choice for low-water gardens.

    • Versatile Garden Use: Suitable for various garden settings, including borders, containers, rock gardens, and mass plantings.

    Tips for Success

    • Proper Watering: Maintain consistent moisture but allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot.
    • Regular Feeding: Feed regularly with a balanced fertilizer to support vigorous growth and abundant blooms.
    • Pruning and Deadheading: Keep the plant tidy and encourage continuous blooming by regular deadheading and occasional pruning.
