Essential Care Instructions for Westland Big Tom Tomato Food
Feeding Schedule for Optimal Tomato Growth
- Early Growth Stage: Start feeding once the plants are established and flowers begin to appear. At this stage, Big Tom encourages root and stem growth, preparing the plant for heavy fruiting.
- Flowering Stage: Increase feeding to weekly applications when flowers appear. Consistent feeding supports energy production in the plant, promoting vigorous flower formation and healthy foliage.
- Fruiting Stage: Once tomatoes start to form, switch to feeding twice weekly. This increased frequency supplies essential nutrients needed for fruit growth, leading to larger, more flavorful tomatoes.
- End of Season: Continue feeding until the last of the tomatoes are harvested. Reducing feeding gradually toward the season’s end can help the plant transition to dormancy if it is a perennial variety.
Tips for Effective Application
- Apply to Moist Soil: Ensure the soil is moist before feeding to help the roots absorb nutrients without stress. Avoid feeding dry soil, as this can result in nutrient burn.
- Target the Roots: Apply Big Tom directly to the base of the plant to deliver nutrients efficiently to the root system. Avoid applying directly onto leaves, which can cause leaf burn in strong sunlight.
- Avoid Overfeeding: Stick to the recommended dilution and frequency, as over-fertilizing can lead to excessive foliage growth at the expense of fruit production.
Seasonal Care and Environmental Factors
- Spring: Begin feeding once the risk of frost has passed and plants are in active growth, typically in early to mid-spring. This early feeding helps set a strong foundation for fruiting.
- Summer: Increase feeding frequency as the plant’s nutrient demands peak. The warmth of summer encourages rapid growth, so consistent feeding is essential.
- Autumn: Gradually reduce feeding frequency as temperatures drop and the season ends. This adjustment allows the plant to wind down its fruiting and prepare for the colder months.
- Greenhouse Cultivation: When growing in a greenhouse, consider slightly reducing the amount of feed during peak heat waves to avoid stressing the plant with excessive nutrients.
Additional Tips for Successful Tomato Growth with Big Tom Tomato Food
Maximizing Fruit Size and Quality
- Consistency is Key: Regular feeding is essential to maintain nutrient levels in the soil, as tomatoes are heavy feeders. Irregular feeding can lead to uneven growth and issues like blossom end rot.
- Monitor for Deficiencies: Watch for signs of nutrient deficiency, such as yellowing leaves or small fruit. These symptoms may indicate the need for additional feeding or possible soil adjustments.
- Use with Compost or Mulch: Adding organic compost or mulch around the base of the plant can improve soil structure, helping retain moisture and nutrients provided by Big Tom.
Complementing with Proper Watering
- Water Regularly: Tomatoes need consistent watering to avoid stress, especially during fruit development. Irregular watering can cause issues like cracked tomatoes and poor fruit quality.
- Water Deeply: Aim for deep watering to encourage strong root growth, which helps the plant access nutrients better. Shallow watering can result in weak roots and nutrient deficiencies.
- Avoid Wetting Foliage: When watering, aim to keep leaves dry, as wet foliage can encourage fungal diseases.
Storage and Safety Tips for Big Tom
- Store Properly: Keep Westland Big Tom Tomato Food in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight, and away from extreme temperatures.
- Safe Handling: Rinse off any fertilizer that comes into contact with skin or eyes and wash hands after handling. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
- Environmental Responsibility: After use, recycle or dispose of the container according to local regulations to minimize environmental impact.
Frequently Asked Questions

Westland Big Tom is specially formulated for tomatoes but can also be used on other fruiting plants, such as peppers and eggplants. However, always check plant-specific nutrient requirements for best results.
Can I use Big Tom Tomato Food in grow bags?
Yes, Big Tom works well in grow bags, as well as in pots and garden beds. Adjust the feeding frequency based on the plant’s growth stage and container size.
Will Big Tom improve the flavor of my tomatoes?
Yes, Big Tom’s nutrient-rich formula, particularly the addition of seaweed, supports the natural flavors of tomatoes, enhancing sweetness and overall taste.
Should I feed Big Tom during heavy rains?
Avoid feeding directly before heavy rain, as excessive water may wash away the nutrients. It’s best to wait until after the rain to ensure the fertilizer stays around the root zone.
