Why Grow Kerr's Pink Seed Potatoes?
Kerr's Pink is a high-yielding potato variety known for its attractive pale pink skin and creamy white flesh. It is a robust crop, providing excellent resistance to drought and a reliable harvest, even in less-than-ideal soil conditions.
- Harvest Time: 18–20 weeks after planting.
- Height: Approximately 60–80cm (24–32 inches).
- Spread: Approximately 40–50cm (16–20 inches).
- Skin and Flesh: Pale pink skin with creamy, floury-textured flesh.
- Culinary Uses: Ideal for boiling, mashing, baking, and frying.
How to Plant Kerr's Pink Seed Potatoes
Preparing Your Seed Potatoes
- Chitting: Start chitting your seed potatoes 6–8 weeks before planting by placing them in a cool, bright area with the eyes facing upward. This encourages healthy sprouts for faster growth after planting.
- Soil Preparation: Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil enriched with compost or well-rotted manure. Ensure the soil is slightly acidic to neutral (pH 5.5–7.0).
Planting Instructions
- Timing: Plant Kerr's Pink potatoes between mid-March and early May, depending on your local frost dates.
- Spacing:
- Space seed potatoes 30cm (12 inches) apart in rows.
- Leave 60–75cm (24–30 inches) between rows for ease of maintenance.
- Depth: Dig a trench 10–15cm (4–6 inches) deep, place the seed potatoes with the sprouts facing upward, and cover with soil.
Maintenance Tips for Kerr's Pink Potatoes
Proper care is essential to achieve a healthy and abundant crop. Below are tips for maintaining your Kerr's Pink potatoes:
Watering
- Ensure consistent watering during dry spells, particularly when tubers are forming (after flowering).
- Avoid overwatering to prevent waterlogging, which can lead to rot or fungal diseases.
Earthing Up
- When the potato shoots reach about 15–20cm (6–8 inches) tall, begin earthing up by mounding soil around the base of the plants.
- Repeat earthing up as the plants grow to keep tubers covered and prevent greening.
Feeding
- Use a balanced potato fertilizer at planting time and a potassium-rich feed mid-season to encourage healthy tuber development.
- Avoid high-nitrogen feeds as they promote foliage growth at the expense of tuber production.
Pest and Disease Management
- Pests: Watch for slugs, wireworms, and aphids. Companion planting with marigolds or nasturtiums can help deter pests.
- Diseases: Kerr's Pink has moderate resistance to some common diseases but benefits from crop rotation to reduce the risk of blight and scab.
Harvesting and Storing Kerr's Pink Potatoes
When to Harvest
- Kerr’s Pink potatoes are ready to harvest 18–20 weeks after planting, once the foliage has yellowed and died back.
How to Harvest
- Use a garden fork to lift the tubers carefully, avoiding damage to the skins.
- Allow the potatoes to dry on the soil surface for a few hours before storage.
Storing Tips
- Cure the harvested potatoes in a cool, dark, and dry location for 1–2 weeks.
- Store in breathable containers, such as hessian sacks, in a frost-free environment.
