How to Plant Record Seed Potatoes
Preparing for Planting
- Chitting: Begin by chitting your seed potatoes 6–8 weeks before planting. Place them in a cool, light-filled space, with the “eyes” facing upwards, to encourage strong sprouts.
- Soil Preparation: Choose a sunny location with fertile, well-drained soil. Add plenty of organic matter, such as compost or well-rotted manure, to improve soil structure and nutrient levels.
Planting Instructions
- When to Plant: Plant your Record seed potatoes from mid to late spring, depending on your region’s frost dates.
- Spacing and Depth:
- Plant each seed potato 30cm (12 inches) apart.
- Space rows 60–75cm (24–30 inches) apart.
- Bury the seed potatoes 10–15cm (4–6 inches) deep with the sprouts facing upwards.
Maintenance Tips for Record Potatoes
Watering
- Keep the soil consistently moist, particularly during dry spells.
- Increase watering once the plants start flowering, as this is when the tubers begin forming.
Earthing Up
- As the plants grow, mound soil around their stems when they reach 15–20cm (6–8 inches) in height.
- Repeat this process periodically to protect developing tubers from sunlight and prevent greening.
Feeding
- Apply a balanced, potassium-rich fertilizer mid-season to boost tuber development.
- Avoid overfeeding with nitrogen as it can encourage excess foliage at the expense of tubers.
Pest and Disease Management
- Pests: Be vigilant for slugs, aphids, and wireworms. Encourage natural predators or use eco-friendly deterrents.
- Diseases: Record potatoes have good resistance to scab and blight. Rotate crops annually to minimize disease risks.
Harvesting and Storing Record Potatoes
When to Harvest
- Harvest 20 weeks after planting, typically from late summer to early autumn.
- Wait for the foliage to yellow and die back, signaling the tubers have matured.
How to Harvest
- Use a garden fork to gently lift the tubers from the soil, taking care not to damage their skins.
- Allow the harvested potatoes to dry on the surface for a few hours before storing.
Storage Tips
- Cure the potatoes in a cool, dark, and dry place for 1–2 weeks to harden their skins and prepare them for storage.
- Store in breathable containers, such as hessian sacks, in a frost-free environment. When stored correctly, Record potatoes can last for several months.
